Rik Mayall’s driving ban - 07/07/03
Notting Hill based comedian Rik Mayall has been banned from driving for three months and fined £1000 after he was caught speeding.

The 45-year-old star, was driving his silver Mercedes car at 113mph on the M5 motorway near Weston-super-Mare when he was clocked by a speed gun on 20 April.

Rik, real name, Richard Michael Mayall, pleaded guilty to the charge on 11 June.


Biography

Born in a town called Droitwich near Birmingham, England on March 7, 58. Rik’s parents were both teachers who met at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. Rik went to King’s School in Worcester, starting at 9 years old instead of 11.

He then attended Manchester University where he met Adrian Edmondson and obtained a degree in drama. While there Rik & Ade performed improvised lunchtime theatre at local clubs and worked with three other colleagues under the title of 20th Century Coyote which played at the Edinburgh Festival to great critical acclaim. That partnership exists to this present day and is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships in modern comedy.

On graduating from college, Rik played "Dromio of Syracuse" in the Oxford and Cambridge Shakespeare Company production of "Comedy of Errors". The smart home near Ladbroke Grove, West London, that Rik bought to live in with his wife a former make-up artist and three children is nicknamed Nintendo Towers.

He bought it with the money he earned from ads for the computer games company.
